FILMNET Review of My Short Film Called VIRULENT

This the review of my film VIRULENT which was made in 2019 before the pandemic BUT just got reviewed by FILMNET... Enjoy!!!

"Virulent," directed by Nathan Waire, presents a stark, thrilling exploration of despair and desperation, masterfully capturing the harrowing slide of its protagonist into criminality. The film's narrative is both intense and compelling, delving into the psyche of a loner whose life spirals out of control in the face of adversity. This grim tale of fate and consequence makes for an absorbing cinematic journey.

The cinematography in "Virulent" plays a crucial role in establishing the film’s bleak, foreboding atmosphere. Waire's use of shadow and light adeptly highlights the internal turmoil of the characters, creating an environment that is as oppressive as the protagonist's mental state. This visual styling is matched by the thoughtful pacing of the film, which allows the audience to truly understand and empathize with the loner's desperation and the unintended path he treads. Each frame is crafted to enhance the emotional depth of the narrative, pulling viewers deeper into the distressing world of the characters.

In terms of performances, the actors deliver with remarkable intensity, particularly the protagonist, whose portrayal of a broken man teetering on the edge of morality is compelling and disturbingly authentic. His interactions with the wayward girl, characterized by their bleak, morally ambiguous dialogue, add a layer of complexity to the film. The girl, both a catalyst and mirror to his descent, is portrayed with a chilling allure. The dynamic between the two leads is both unsettling and gripping, feeding into the film's exploration of human vulnerability and manipulation.

Director Nathan Waire's statement, "When all seems impossible have FAITH and push not only adds a poignant layer of understanding to the narrative but also challenges the viewer to contemplate the broader implications of the characters' actions. "Virulent" is a stark reminder of the thin lines between despair, moral choice, and inevitability, making it a must-watch for those who appreciate film as a medium that not only entertains but also provokes thought and reflection. Waire’s crafting of this film showcases a significant talent with a clear, impactful artistic vision.
