As you can tell I'm stresin' big time!!! The V2VIFF.com fest site is fine and progressing at a good pace. The movie stuff is chugging along so I can't complain. My previous short films are actually getting some good press so WHY AM I FREAKING OUT... It's just not happening fast enough!!!

I just figured out that each and every time I make or do an art project it is like a coping mechanism that keeps me from flipping my lid (LMAO 4 REAL!!!)! I figure at this pace I had better rent a warehouse for storage of all the art projects I am going to complete before I leave this world (AY-YII-YIIIIIIIII!!!!)!

An Anniversary & A B-Day Hoorahhh!

First let me say HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PANDA! 

Secondly, the Summer is almost over so lets drink/toast to happiness, success and good fortune (or at least the eternal hope for better days).  Remember to say a prayer for those who are not with us anymore. Hopefully, they did what they were meant to do in this world and are in a better place. And also try to be thankful that you still have breath in your lungs, life's light in your eyes, and hopefully true LOVE in your heart.

ONI MASKS Are On FLICKR!!!!

Just a quick update about the masks. I finished two of them and now I am inspired to do two more... Instead of becoming anxious about the fests I take things from around my house and apartment and create art. It also is very important to note that Halloween is right around the corner so all my masks have that type of theme. The two I finished are of a demon/devil and a ghost! They are friendly though :)

Is just that! He looks fierce and scary but his horns are actually antenna (like a butterfly) his ears are rose buds, and the rest of his face is made up of nature symbols. Even more interesting is that he originally started off as the double faced Janus Mask that I filmed for the Guggenheim Contest. Boredom can either inspire creativity or destruction... Or a little of both.

THE GHOST BRIDE - DRAGONA

She is the combination of a vengeful female ghost, and a dragon! She has three faces and  is suppose to be the companion piece to KUTUU. Both masks are extremely theatrical and I am even considering writing or creating a story around the masks I make just to see them in full regalia on stage.

Helping Out Friends Of Film & Myself Through IndieGoGo!!!

We recently premiered in NJ at a wonderful location in Bloomfield called THE MMAC (Multi Media Arts Center).

It was a great experience and one that I cannot forget. It has come to my attention that THE MMAC needs a little financial help so I am reaching out to you to keep them afloat. It is one of the rare places where you can see indie film and even show your own film there without a lot of hassle and with (if you are good at advertising) plenty of fanfare.

Chuck is a hard worker and owner of this theater. He has been in the arts most of his life. It would really be a crime if this theater closed its doors due to a lack of finance. Just think of all the Great artist in the NJ and surrounding area that would miss the opportunity to show their work without his doors open and available to the public. BOY: A Story Based On True Events (The Movie)

Hey Everyone!

Below is the IndieGoGo page for my next and first feature length film. It is loosely based on the novella of the same name that I wrote. I don't recommend that you read the book because the twist ending of the film is only insinuated by the novella. Plus, the novella was sent straight to press and did NOT get proper editing.

Please spread the "GOOD" word about this movie. Funding was extremely difficult on the last film and I want to make a progressive leap forward on this endeavor which is slated for next year.

ONI MASK

Oni are Japanese ghost, demons, and devils. I was exploring on the web when the concept kinda hit me. Obviously, different cultures view and use certain terminology according to their belief system. Being very Western in lifestyle I was scared at first of the idea, however, I grew up a little (lol) and explored the idea further realizing that a lack of knowledge is way worse than having too much of the wrong information.

Once I figured out that Oni were not originally evil just a way of rationalizing the unknown in the past I soon grew fond of the concept. To face the fear I even created an Oni mask (more akin to anime than folklore) which encompassed my love of nature and themes there in. I even named my mask Kutuu Jujuu Ua Oni which is a fusion of African and Japanese words meaning Butterfly Magic Flower Ghost.

I will post images of my mask once it is completely painted until then read if you like the article from WikiAnswers explaining Oni masks in Japanese culture.

The oni is the demon of japanese folklore. It takes on many other names, sometimes referred to as a devil. Unlike most western cultures, the oni is not necessarily seen as an evil being. It is said to be of a dual nature, meaning it's powers can be good or evil, depending on if it likes the subject it attaches itself too. Oni are credited with with bringing good health, safety, peace and avoiding disaster. A typical oni mask has horns, bulging eyes, a sinister looking smile and sharp teeth. Sometimes, it is shown in a form that looks more like a skull. This represents a very black and white image of transition. A representation that good is leaning toward evil, or that evil is trying to become good. Often, oni masks will have hair. If one could break away from the traditional impression that the demon is an instrument of evil, it would make the oni a more widely accepted good luck symbol.

I have known about this trailer and movie for awhile but now it seems very appropriate for some reason to show this. A falsely accused "crazy" girl fights her way out of an asylum while have fantastic visual trips along the way. Is it a female version of Brazil where there there really is no escape just insanity or is it something a little new and different where the "crazy" girl actually walks away a little beat up but free as a loon... hmmmm.

SHIMMER

I wrote this poem because of what is inside. A Universal Spirit housed in what I hope is a very unique soul wrapped in an Earthly shell that will someday return to dust from which it came. FYI - The poem came to me while I was working on my model sword. Sort of like the Japanese idea that the sword was/is the soul of the swordsman.

HELLO, MAMAS!!! NATALIE PORTMAN vs MILA KUNIS in THE BLACK SWAN TRAILER

I love the warped psychological aspect of this film just from the trailer. I am wondering if Natalie's character is just going insane or whether there is something deeper and more sinister at work. So what that Natalie and Mila kiss?!? :P If it has something to do with the overall psychosis of the character... BRING IT ON!!! However, if it is just for titillation's sake I'd honestly rather watch porn. I am seriously hoping for crazy/disturbing mentally twisted cat-fight. ME-OUUCH!!

THE BLACK SWAN THEORY

When I was very young I saw a documentary about swans. Half way through the middle of the special there was the rare appearance of a Black Swan. It made me feel very special and I knew I was seeing something on film that was rare and beautiful. It wasn't until the narrator spoke about how they could and should destroy the Black Swan (the one Black Swan out of a field of hundreds of normal White Swans) to keep its genetic quality from spreading that I actually began to cry. A 10 year old crying about an implied social dynamic that he barely understood but knew was absolutely wrong.

Very upset I explained to my elementary school teacher what I had seen the night before and she tried to convince me that I had misheard the narrator. The following night she watched the show's encore presentation. The next day, she apologized to me (as if it were her fault???) and rationally explained that people sometimes don't understand what true beauty is? Ever since then I have held that moment close to me.

I do like that things have progressed since my youth. I even like how the Black Swan Theory has evolved from what was originally called The Black Swan Problem.

People have to realize that Nature/GOD/The Universe or whatever else you would like to call it DOES NOT MAKE MISTAKES! Judge for yourself but I suggest that you do so wisely.

The Black Swan Theory or "Theory of Black Swan Events" was developed by Nassim Nicholas Taleb to explain 1) the disproportionate role of high-impact, hard-to-predict, and rare events that are beyond the realm of normal expectations in history, science, finance and technology, 2) the non-computability of the probability of the consequential rare events using scientific methods (owing to their very nature of small probabilities) and 3) the psychological biases that make people individually and collectively blind to uncertainty and unaware of the massive role of the rare event in historical affairs. E.G.O.T. Or Something Great In Life To Achieve

Achievement. It is hard to access your goals when you are walking along the path of Life. However, when you look at those who came before you and realize the potential of those who will follow in your footsteps it becomes less about the goal and more about how you got to where you are going.

I was watching one of the festival sites and in a tribute they mentioned that the recipient was an E.G.O.T. or someone who received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.

Hmmmm...

I want this title before I end my career.

ONE BAD-A$$ YANK!

Musician/composer/actor STEVE YANK had some free time this last Sunday so we filmed a monologue from both PULP FICTION and ANIMAL HOUSE. Steve did a fantastic job and nailed the PULP FICTION monologue in just four takes! However, two of his best renditions had outside interference. The first was an airplane and the best version had too much wind blowing at the beginning so I split the difference and went with the best take. A little wind at the beginning can't stop us it just fills our sails and speeds us towards our ultimate goals!

OSCAR MICHEAUX - A Lost Legend and My Newfound HERO!

The majority of people in America and the world do not know of this legendary filmmaker and pioneer of cinematic truth and justice. I, too, am guilty of only recently discovering this trailblazer due to the USPS issuing of his commemorative stamp. SHOCKED when I read his biography I immediately looked for his name on IMDb.com and there he was!!! Little known and even less respected for his amazing contributions and boldface daring in a time when looking certain individuals in the eye could get you killed! He even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame but to this day no one knows when it was created and given as a tribute to him.

He is now and will forever be one of my most important and influential cinematic role models. OSCAR MICHEAUX... More than a man... He is a LEGEND... He is a HERO!

Oscar Micheaux, the first African-American to produce a feature-length film (The Homesteader (1919) in 1920) and a sound feature-length film (The Exile (1931) in 1931), is not a major figure in American film just for these milestones, but because his oeuvre is a window onto the American psyche as regards race and its deleterious effects on individuals and society. He also is a pioneer of independent cinema. Though the end products of his labors often were technically crude due to budgetary constraints, Micheaux the filmmaker is a symbol of the artist triumphing over long odds to bring his vision to the public at large while serving in the socially important role of critical spirit.

"One of the greatest tasks of my life has been to teach that the colored man can be anything," Micheaux said. He used the new medium of the motion picture to communicate his ideas in order to rebut racism and to raise the consciousness of African-Americans in an age of segregation and overt, legal racism. As a filmmaker, Micheaux was "50 years ahead of his time", according to Kansas Humanities Council Board member Martin Keenan, the chairman of the Oscar Micheaux Film Festivals in Great Bend, Kansas, in 2001 and 2003.

Oscar Micheaux was born in 1884, in Metropolis, Illinois, one of 13 children of former slaves. When he was 17 years old he left home for Chicago, where he got a job as a Pullman porter, one of the best jobs an African-American could get in the days of Jim Crow laws that separated the races and were a legal bulwark of racism. Inspired by the self-help, assimilationist teachings of Booker T. Washington and the "Go West" pioneer philosophy of Horace Greeley, Micheaux acquired two 160-acre tracts of land in Gregory County, South Dakota, in 1905, despite no previous experience in farming.

Micheaux's experiences as a homesteader were the basis for his first novel, "The Conquest: The Story of a Negro Pioneer", which was published in 1913. He rewrote it into his most famous novel, "The Homesteader" (1917), which he self-published and distributed, selling it door-to-door to small businessmen and homesteaders in small towns, white people with whom he lived and did business with. "The Homesteader" not only elucidated Micheaux's understanding of societal cleavages but proselytized for assimilating black and white communities. Micheaux was firmly dedicated to the idea of art as a didactic medium.

Micheaux lost his homestead in 1915 due to financial losses caused by a drought. He moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where he established the Western Book and Supply Co. He continued to write novels, selling them himself, door-to-door. Meanwhile, brothers George Johnson and Noble Johnson, African-American movie pioneers who ran the Lincoln Motion Picture Co. in Los Angeles, wanted to make "The Homesteader" into a film. They tried to buy the rights to the novel but would not meet Micheaux's demands that he direct it and that it be made with a large budget.

After his demands were refused, Micheaux reorganized Western Book and Supply as the Micheaux Film and Book Co. in Chicago. He began to raise money for his own film version of "The Homesteader". Micheaux returned to the white businessmen and farmers around Sioux City, Iowa, where he still maintained an office, and sold them stock in his new company. In this way he was able to raise enough capital to begin filming his novel in Chicago, which was then a major film production center.

The film came in at eight reels, making it the first feature-length film made by an African-American. "Race films" - as films made for black audiences were called until the advent of the modern civil rights movement in the 1950s - and even "mainstream" films had been mostly shorts up to that time. Even Charles Chaplin didn't make his first feature length film until 1921, with The Kid (1921).

The Homesteader (1919) premiered in Chicago on February 20, 1919. An ad for the movie placed in the "Chicago Defender", the premier newspaper for African-Americans, heralded Micheaux's film as the "greatest of all Race productions" and claimed it was "destined to mark a new epoch in the achievements of the Darker Races . . . every Race man and woman should cast aside their skepticism regarding the Negro's ability as a motion picture star, and go and see, not only for the absorbing interest obtaining therein, but as an appreciation of those finer arts which no race can ignore and hope to obtain a higher plan of thought and action."

His next film, Within Our Gates (1920), was his response to D.W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation (1915), a film that had glorified the Ku Klux Klan and justified the violent oppression of African-Americans to prevent miscegenation. Though Griffith's flawed masterpiece was the most popular movie until the release of another Civil War potboiler called Gone with the Wind (1939) in 1939, it was loathed by African-Americans due to its crude and hateful racial stereotypes. "Within These Gates" was made to rebut Griffith and show that the reality of racism in the U.S. was that African-Americans were more likely to be lynched and exploited by whites than the reverse. The movie showed African-American and white communities that the racism of the dominant society could be challenged. Micheaux's place in history was assured as he injected an African-American perspective, via the powerful medium of the motion picture, into the American consciousness.

Working out of Chicago, Michaeaux subsequently made more than 30 films over the next three decades, including musicals, comedies, westerns, romances and gangster films. Some of the popular themes in his work were African-Americans passing for white, intermarriage and legal injustice. He used actors from New York's Lafayette Players, and always cast his actors on the basis of type, with light-skinned African-American actors typically playing the leads, and darker-skinned blacks the heavies. That trait was part of the consciousness of the African-American community (and mirrored the very racism that he inveigled against) that persists to this day, and Micheaux was severely criticized for it by later critics. However, no critic could deny the importance of Micheaux's movies, as they were a radical departure from Hollywood's racist portrayal of blacks as dolts, Uncle Toms, Mammies and dangerous bucks. As the most successful and prolific of black filmmakers, Micheaux was vital to African-American and overall American consciousness by providing a diverse portfolio of non-stereotyped black characters, as well as images and stories of African-American life.

Micheaux married Alice B. Russell in March 1926, and the two remained married until his death in March 1951. He was buried at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, Kansas.

IT'S SHOWTIME!!!!

Hey Everyone!

THE YARD is nearly complete and we have already booked two theaters in the next two months.

The first official showing/premiere will be on June 30th at The Multi Media Arts Center (MMAC) 562 Bloomfield Ave in Bloomfield, NJ. CHUCK, the coordinator and curator of THE MMAC, was generous enough to give us the entire evening to show both HG2 and to premiere THE YARD. There will even be a Q&A session during the showing so that the audience can get to know both the cast and crew of each film. It is $10 per person and the show will start @ 8pm. Word to the wise is to get there early ya' feel me!!! I... AM... LOVIN... IT!!!

The NYC premiere will be Wednesday July 28th @ THE ANTHOLOGY FILM ARCHIVES located 32 2nd Ave @ 2nd Street in the Big Apple. The lord and master of film (lol), BARNEY OLDFIELD, was very generous as well. He gave us the great time slot of 9:15pm that night which is super cool seeing that NYC's nightlife doesn't start stirring until that time anyway!!! Tickets are $6 per person... For NYC that is a SUPER DEAL!!!
